Jang Ye-eun (Korean: 장예은; born 10 January 1998), simply known as Yeeun (Korean: 예은), is a South Korean rapper, songwriter, singer and host. She made her start in the entertainment industry as the main rapper of the South Korean girl group CLC,[1] under Cube Entertainment.[2]
Life and career[edit]
1998–2014: Early life and pre-debut[edit]
Yeeun was born and raised in Dongducheon, Gyeonggi, South Korea.[3] She has an older sister.[3] She attended Dongbo Elementary School, Dongducheon Girls' Middle School and School of Performing Arts Seoul. She graduated from the latter in February 2017.[4]
Yeeun was a high-achieving student, having been the top student at her elementary school.[5]
In an interview, Jang cited Girls' Generation's "I Got a Boy" as her main inspiration for pursuing K-pop.[6][7]
In 2014, Yeeun made appearances in the music videos for "Secret" by G.NA, and "Beep Beep" by BtoB. Yeeun also participated in "Secret" promotional activities as a backing dancer with other Cube Entertainment trainees[8]
2015–present: Debut and career with CLC[edit]
Yeeun was revealed as the main rapper and maknae of the girl group CLC in 2015.[9] The group officially debuted on March 19, 2015 with their debut single, "Pepe", from their debut EP, First Love.[10][11]
Since the release of the 2016 EP, Nu.Clear, Jang has been credited as a lyricist for all CLC albums and singles that followed.
As of January 2021, Yeeun has participated in all CLC releases and promotions, since the group's debut.
Solo activities[edit]
In 2015, Yeeun featured in the music video for Son Dong-woon's Japanese debut, Kimishika.[12] In June 2015, Yeeun co-hosted BTOB's comeback showcase for their album, Complete.[13]
In 2018, Yeeun made her runway debut for Greedilous at the 2018 F/W Hera Seoul Fashion Week[14][15]
From May 2018 to November 2019, Jang Yeeun hosted The Show with NCT Dream's Jeno.[16]
In 2018, Yeeun premiered her V Live show, Yeeun’s Sweet Radio, running for 14 weeks from January 13 to July 13. Following the warm reception to Yeeun’s Sweet Radio from fans, Jang premiered the second season of the ‘radio’ show, subtitled Yeeun’s Even Sweeter Radio, exclusively on YouTube, in 2019. The second season ran for 43 episodes, from February 5 until December 15. The season featured 2 special episodes recorded in front of an audience of fans. From September 2019 to February 2020, Yeeun hosted Vibe Chart Show on Naver Now.[17]
Together with fellow CLC member, Oh Seung-hee, Yeeun appeared on the original soundtrack for the drama, My Fellow Citizens!, with the song "Really Bad Guy", released in April 2019.
In May 2020, Yeeun joined the cast of the Mnet musical reality show, Good Girl.[18][19] In an interview with Singles magazine, she revealed that she decided to participate in the show because it was not purely a competition but an opportunity to both collaborate with other female artists, and challenge herself as an artist.[6][7] Yeeun released 3 songs as part of the Good Girl soundtrack: "Witch", "Barbie" and "Mermaid". Yeeun hoped to challenge preconceptions of idols with her "Barbie" performance against Mommy Son.[20] She promoted "Barbie" on the 672nd episode of M Countdown.[21] She released a special solo music video for "Mermaid" on the CLC YouTube channel in the run-up to CLC's September 2020 comeback, Helicopter.
Public image[edit]
In the media[edit]
Yeeun is well-known for having sported a bob cut during CLC promotions spanning 2018 to 2019, gaining the moniker of "단발머리 걔" (short-haired girl) in the media.[22][23]
Endorsements[edit]
Yeeun participated in the Spring/Summer 2016 and Fall/Winter 2016 TBJ campaigns, alongside BtoB.[24] In August 2020, Yeeun was announced to be the brand model for Cosio's Super Glass Care Treatment line.[25]
Personal life[edit]
Yeeun is bilingual, other than Korean, she is fluent in Japanese, having passed the JPLT test.[26]
Yeeun shares a close friendship with Lovelyz member, Yein.[27]
In August 2018, images and rumours surfaced online that alleged that Yeeun was dating Pentagon member and labelmate, Yuto. In a statement, Cube Entertainment had denied the allegations, stating that the two were "simply close friends and colleagues who have been friends since before their debut".[28]
