Japanese Fruit Sandwich or Fruit Sando (フルーツサンド, Furūtsu Sando[1]) is a sandwich filled with fresh seasonal fruits and whipped cream between two slices of shokupan, a traditional milk bread in Japan.[2] While the possibilities are endless, symmetrically shaped strawberries, banana, orange, kiwi, mango, and grapes make the centerpiece of the sandwich. It is a popular snack and can be easily made at home or found everywhere from cafes to convenience stores in Japan.[3][4]

History[edit]

There are two claims on how Fruit Sandwich originated in Japan. The first claim says that it began in a fruit stand called Yaoiso (ヤオイソ), founded in 1869 in Kyoto. Although the cafe didn’t open until 1972, the claim says they were selling fruit sandwiches well before opening. The other claim is from Sembikiya (千疋屋), the first fruit parlor (opened in Tokyo in 1868) that started selling fruit sandwiches.[1][5]
