Career[edit]

Jason was the Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Tyco Federal Credit Union in Menlo Park, CA. In 2009, Jason traveled the country to financially educate employees of Tyco International, ADT, and TE Connectivity in the workplace. In 2010, Vitug was recognized for his efforts in promoting financial literacy in the workplace by the Society for Financial Education and Personal Development, Inc in Washington, DC.[3] Vitug has been a strong advocate of credit unions and the financial cooperative mission. He has collaborated with credit union organizations such as CUNA and NAFCU.

In 2012, Vitug resigned from his senior executive job and backpacked around the world traveling to 20 countries in 12 months.[4] Vitug has stated the experience gave him the "aha" moment to empower a generation through financial knowledge. Upon returning to the United States, Vitug started a personal finance blog and on October 2013 successfully crowdfunded his initial seed money raising $78,501[5] through the support of 541 people on the website Indiegogo.[6]

In 2014, Vitug began appearing on local cable television shows and quoted on several publications most notably on Business Insider for his personal finance tips and in Inc for his decision to take a gap year in between jobs.[7] Vitug's media appearances has focused on the millennial perspective on money, living, career and travel.

On June 2015, Vitug founded The Road to Financial Wellness, a local grassroots campaign to turn local money discussions into a national conversation on financial wellbeing. To date, Vitug's project has reached 15,000 attendees and has driven well over 28,000 miles across the United States.[8]

June 7, 2016 Vitug's first traditionally published book, You Only Live Once: The Roadmap to Financial Wellness and a Purposeful Life was released by John Wiley & Sons.[9] In July, Vitug's book was reviewed by columnist Paul B. Brown of The New York Times[10] ending the review with "If Mr. Vitug is trying to educate millennials, then even a basic primer would have helped. But his bigger point is right. The life you want to live should determine your financial goals." Vitug's first book was named as Top 5 Best Personal Finance and Economics Books of 2016 by the Financial Post.[11]

Vitug has written for Business Insider,[12] US News & World Report[13] and a frequent guest blogger in numerous personal finance and credit union websites. He has appeared in digital spots for Money Magazine,[14] Yahoo News[15] and Experian.
