Deena B. Katz (born February 12, 1950[1]) is an American Certified Financial Planner, author, and chairwoman of the Miami, Florida investment firm Evensky & Katz. She also serves as a full professor in the Personal Financial Planning Division at Texas Tech University

Biography[edit]

Katz graduated from Adrian College with a bachelor's degree in English & Education in 1972,[2] later becoming a member of the Board of Regents for the college.

She later worked as an English teacher[3] before developing a financial practice. In 1990, she moved to Miami, merging her practice with those of Harold Evensky and Peter Brown to form Evensky, Brown & Katz, where she previously served as president and is now chairwoman.[4] (The firm became Evensky & Katz in 2004, after the retirement of Peter Brown.)

She was awarded a Doctorate of Humane Letters (honoris causa) from Adrian College in 2001.[5]

In 2006, KATZ joined Texas Tech University as Associate Professor in the Department of Personal Financial Planning. She received tenure in 2012 and Full Professor in 2016. She retired from Texas Tech in 2018.

Katz has one child and four grandchildren through her marriage to Harold Evensky.

Financial planning[edit]

Katz has made a number of personal appearances to organizations and has been a guest speaker at sponsored events in several countries, including Australia, Canada, Japan, England, India, Ireland, Singapore, New Zealand, Malaysia, and South Africa.[5]

In October 20, 2013, Katz received the Financial Planning Association's Heart of Financial Planning Award, granted jointly to Katz and her husband and business partner Harold Evensky. In granting the award, FPA cited Katz and Evensky's work "educating current and future advisers through teaching, internship coordination and writing books."[6] Additionally, Katz has received numerous honors, including Insider's Forum, Iconoclast Award (2014); Investment News Women to Watch (2015) and Lifetime Achievement Award,(2016.) She also has been awarded the Insider's Forum Leadership Award in 2018.

Katz was named one of Financial Planning Magazine's 5 Most Influential People (the "Movers & Shakers" list) in the Planning Profession in 2001.[5]

Ms. Katz was selected as one of Investment Advisor's 25 Most Influential People in the Financial Planning Industry 14 times, beginning in 2003.[7][8]

She has also been named one of Medical Economics' 150 Best Financial Advisers for Doctors three times.[7]

Katz was the first female Director of a United States Rotary Club.[5]

Publications[edit]

She is the author or co-editor of several books relating to financial planning, has written for several trade publications and was the first female Editor-in-Chief of the trade publication Journal of Retirement Planning.[9] She has also contributed to the Wall Street Journal, ABC, PBS, CBS, and CNBC-Asia[3]

Katz has written nine books, including "Retirement Income Redesigned," "Investment Think Tank," and "Deena Katz on Practice Management".[7]

She has also been quoted as nationally recognized expert in several elite publications, including: AARP Magazine, Barron's, The Boston Globe, Business Week, Consumer Reports, Forbes Magazine, Fortune Magazine, Newsweek, The New York Times, The New York Post, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Worth Magazine.
