Jason van Wyk (born January 10, 1990) is a South African composer and music producer based in Cape Town.

Biography[edit]

Van Wyk started producing techno and trance music during his early teenage years, with the majority of these works being released through Black Hole Recordings after signing with them in 2009.[1][2] During this time, he collaborated with and provided remixes for artists such as BT & Kirsty Hawkshaw,[3] Audien,[4] Stephen J. Kroos[5] and JPL[6]. These releases gained support from the likes of Armin van Buuren,[7] Paul van Dyk,[8] Paul Oakenfold,[9] Above & Beyond,[10] and Tiesto,[11] with appearances on radio programs such as A State of Trance[12] and the In Search of Sunrise compilation CD series.

Van Wyk's first solo album Days You Remember was released in November 2013.[13] The album was a departure from his previously established sound, taking influence from abstract electronic music, post-classical and ambient.[14][15]

Van Wyk's second album, Attachment,[16] was released in 2016 and subsequently reissued together with his third album, Opacity,[17] in 2017 on the UK label Home Normal. Described as “environmental chamber music” in Rockerilla’s review of Opacity,[18] both albums consisted of minimal compositions for piano, chamber strings and electronics.

In November 2018, it was announced that van Wyk had signed to the American label n5MD.[19] His fourth album, Threads,[20] was released in July 2021.[21] A darker, experimental electronic album; Threads was described as a return to form in some ways, going back to atmospheric beat-driven production and making use of heavier synthesiser parts.[22][23]

Besides his releases, van Wyk has composed for various film and media projects. These include the feature film Triggered,[24] released through Samuel Goldwyn Films in 2020,[25] as well as for brands such as The Criterion Collection,[26] Taschen,[27] and Netflix.[28] He has worked as an additional music composer within in the film industry as well as a sound designer in conjunction with Roland and their subsidiary Virtual Sonics.[29][30]
