Jaygee Macapugay is an American musical theater actress. She is an original cast member of School of Rock on Broadway.[1][2] She played the lead role of Imelda Marcos in Here Lies Love at the Public Theater [3] In 2017, she returned to the role when the musical opened at the Seattle Repertory Theater.[4]

Career[edit]

Macapugay graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in advertising.[5] During one of her days off, she auditioned for Disney and she moved to Orlando where she got her start as a performer in Disneyworld at the Tarzan Rocks show at Animal Kingdom.[6] She later played the role of Pocahontas.[7]

After leaving Disney, Macapugay moved on to several regional theater productions, including The King & I at Kansas City Starlight Theater (starring Lou Diamond Phillips as the King), Kim in Miss Saigon at The Muny, Amneris in Aida at Seaside Music Theater, and Irene Molloy in an all Asian cast of Hello Dolly! for the National Asian Artists Project at the Pershing Square Signature Center.[7][8] She first played the role of Imelda Marcos in 2009 in the off-Broadway Pan Asian Repertory Theater production of Imelda: A New Musical at the Julia Miles Theatre.[7][9]

Here Lies Love[edit]

In 2013, Macapugay joined the ensemble of Here Lies Love for its original run at the Public Theater. Initially, she was as an understudy for Ruthie Ann Miles, but she took on the lead role when Miles left the show during its second run in October 20, 2014.[3][10] She continued to play the role until the end of its run on December 31, 2014. One New York Times critic reviewed her performance with the following: "Imelda is now played, quite devastatingly, by Jaygee Macapugay. (The excellent Jose Llana, as Marcos, and Conrad Ricamora, as Aquino, are still on board.) She bears a less exact physical resemblance to her character than her predecessor, the wonderful Ruthie Ann Miles. But she adds an extra dash of molten steel that makes this Imelda a red-hot chiller."[11]

In 2017, Macapugay reprised her role as Imelda Marcos at the Seattle Repertory Theater for a 12-week run - with Mark Bautista playing the role of Ferdinand Marcos and Ricamora reprising his role as Ninoy Aquino.[4] One critic from the Seattle Times shares: "Played in stirring voice and with great hauteur by Jaygee Macapugay, this poor, gushingly innocent small-town beauty queen transforms herself into an enchantress".[12] A critic from Queen Ann and Magnolia News shared: "Jaygee Macapugay from the Off-Broadway production, steps into Imelda’s shoes. And they fit beautifully. She has a lovely voice and believable acting chops."[13]

School of Rock[edit]

When School of Rock premiered for a brief residency at the Gramercy Theater from June 3-5, 2015, Macapugay was featured as part of the workshop.[14]

On November 9 2015, Macapugay made her Broadway debut in Andrew Lloyd Webber's new musical School of Rock at the Winter Garden Theatre. Coincidentally, her debut takes place in the theater where she saw another Webber musical- Cats[15] Macapugay was originally cast as part of the Adult Ensemble and was later promoted to Ms. Hathaway.[1][3]

Other Appearances[edit]

In October 2014, Macapugay was a guest on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, along with Antonio Sabàto Jr. and Joey McIntyre.[16]

In October 2015, Macapugay was featured in a Buzzfeed article featuring Lea Salonga and other Filipino American trailblazers.[2]

In October 2016, Macapugay joined musical group Broadway Barkada for a special performance at the White House for Filipino American History Month.[17][18]
