Jeanette Zacarías Zapata (6 June 2003 – 2 September 2021) was a Mexican boxer who competed in the welterweight division.
Life and career[edit]
Zacarías was born on 6 June 2003 in Aguascalientes City, Mexico. She began her professional boxing career on 27 January 2018[1] at the age of fourteen and she had managed to fight six bouts of which she only won two and lost four others, three of them by knockout.
At twelve years of age, her father enrolled her in boxing classes in order for her to be trained in self-defense techniques against possible future attacks due to gender violence.[2]
Death[edit]
Zacarías was seriously knocked out by her opponent, Canadian boxer Marie Pier Houle, in a boxing match held in Montreal, Quebec on August 28, 2021. As a result of the blow, and still on the ring, she began to suffer seizures and was attended by medical services. She was subsequently admitted in serious condition to the Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur de Montréal, where she spent five days in an induced coma.[3] She died on September 2 at the age of eighteen.[3]
