Jeannette Deshaies Leboeuf (July 25, 1912 – July 24, 2007) was a Canadian politician. She was the first woman to be elected councillor of Saint-Louis-de-France under mayor Maurice Paquin in 1974.[2]
Biography[edit]
Early life[edit]
She was born in Mont-Carmel, Quebec in 1912.
Marriage and children[edit]
In 1934, at age 22, Leboeuf married Adrien, her partner, in her native town of Mont-Carmel, Quebec. She gave birth to 6 children which in turn gave birth to 21 grandchildren.[2]
Retirement and later life[edit]
In 1953, the couple moved to Saint-Maurice, Quebec, where they operated a farm for 15 years. The farm was later sold when they retired. It was at this time that Adrien and Jeannette moved to Saint-Louis-de-France.
In 1974, Leboeuf became the first woman elected in the city's council. This achievement earned her the title of city personality of the year, the same year. In 1978, she did not run again.
Later, Leboeuf served as the secretary and treasurer of Aféas (a womens' rights association) and of the club of the Golden Age for several years. Meanwhile, she accepted sewing contracts, where Leboeuf created the uniforms of Saint-Louis-de-France's caisse populaire employees. In her spare time, she drove her car and loved to play cards and solve crossword puzzles.[2]
