Jeff Ajueshi (born 20 July 1978) is a Nigerian Art Curator and Gallerist.[1][2]
Early life and career[edit]
Jeff Ajueshi was born in Benin City in Old Bendel State, with an Urhobo father from Oghara and a Benin mother from Oredo in Benin City. He attended Ologbotsere primary school, Benin City where he completed elementary education and Edo college for his tertiary education.
Jeff Ajueshi stands as a prominent creative entrepreneur in Nigeria, renowned for his role as a leading curator and gallerist. In 2007, he established the Thought Pyramid Art Centre in Abuja, Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory, which has evolved into a creative hub dedicated to the intersection of visual art and culture.[3][4]
During his tenure at the Thought Pyramid Art Centre, Jeff has curated over 100 art exhibitions. Notably, the recent exhibition, "New Conversations: What the Eagles Saw," harnessed the works of some of Nigeria's most esteemed art masters to recount the nation's history and chart a vision for its future. The exhibition showcased the creations of notable artists such as Ben Enwonwu, Ben Osawe, Bruce Onobrakpeya, Okpu Eze, David Dale, Erhabor Emokpae, Jimoh Buraimoh, Muraina Oyelami, Rufus Ogundele, Twins 77, Bisi Fakeye, and Kolade Oshinowo, among others.[5][6][7]
Recognizing the demand for a dedicated space for artists and art enthusiasts to interact with, Jeff constructed a purpose-built home for the Thought Pyramid Art Centre in the upscale Norman Williams area of Ikoyi in Lagos State. This endeavor aligns with his commitment to advancing contemporary art in Nigeria and offers a multifaceted facility encompassing a gallery, dialogue spaces, an arts and crafts shop, and a lounge/restaurant. The centre has emerged as a significant rendezvous for art lovers, writers, poets, and policy experts who convene under various platforms to deliberate on ways to advance Nigeria's socio-cultural, economic, and political future.[8][9]
Answering the call for more art and cultural spaces in Nigeria, Jeff inaugurated the Thought Pyramid Art Centre in Oghara, Delta State, serving as an Artists/Writers in Residency (AIR). As part of his dedication to fostering the growth of art in Nigeria, he established the Foundation for Arts and Creative Talents (FACT), an artists and writers residency program in Oghara, Delta State. Through this initiative, he aims to positively impact the unemployed youth in the Niger Delta, previously known for restiveness and militancy. Jeff expanded his endeavors further in 2023 with the opening of his fourth branch in the ancient city of Benin, where he was born in 1978.[10]
Jeff offers invaluable thought leadership in the Nigerian art sphere, actively engaging as a lecturer and discussion leader on collaborative strategies and professional practices in colleges of arts and design across Nigeria.[11] He continues to manage a diverse array of art projects, including Art Curator and Gallery Assistant Workshop, Undiscovered, Mentoring Moments, the Children Art Club, Catch Them Young Initiative, the Life Drawing Platform, and several other innovative initiatives.[12]
