Jeff Corwin (photographer)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Jeff Corwin (born June 4, 1954 in Los Angeles, California) is fine art photographer based in Bozeman, Montana, United States. After a four-decade career as a successful commercial photographer, he transitioned to fine art photography.

Early life[edit]

Jeff Corwin's roots in photography began when he was fifteen and his father gave him his Argus C3 rangefinder and built him a darkroom. When he was 18, he became the assistant to a professional photographer in Los Angeles. This introduced him to the world of commercial photography, specifically in corporate environments, and the business of photography.

Commercial photography career[edit]

In 1979, Corwin went out on his own. His first major assignment came in 1980 when he photographed the Northrop Corporation's engineers for the company's award-winning annual report. This launched his commercial career, shooting for ad agencies and graphic design firms with corporate, aerospace and industrial clientele.[1][2] His photography was awarded numerous Black Book AR100 Awards. During the mid-to-late 1980s, Corwin was a stringer for Time, Fortune and Forbes Magazines, photographing varied subject matter, ranging from stories about heroin addiction in the upper class to education advancement in East LA. During his career he was commissioned to shoot portrait photography, with subjects including Bill Gates, Ray Bradbury, Gloria Allred, Daryl Gates and Cesar Chavez.

In 1984-85, he studied with Arnold Newman[3], the environmental portrait master.

Over his 40-year career, Corwin shot in 41 countries and five continents. His clients included Boeing, Microsoft, Nintendo, Delta Airlines, Apple Computer, AT&T Wireless, Charles Schwab, Coca-Cola Company, Comcast, Dell Computer, IBM, MasterCard, Rolls-Royce, Netflix, FedEx, the Seattle Symphony, Starbucks, USC, Rosewood Hotels and Resorts and the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation.

Fine art photography[edit]

The seeds for Corwin's fine art photography were sown 15 years ago during an assignment in the eastern part of Washington State. The sparse landscape of rolling hills and rich volcanic soil personally resonated. He photographs in black and white and recently has begun shooting in color that is muted and shifted in temperature. In his fine art photography, Corwin brought forward the same vision used in his commercial photography: simplicity, graphic forms, strong lines or configurations that repeat.

While his focus is landscape photography primarily set in Montana, New Mexico and Washington state, he has bodies of work that go in other directions, such as two portrait series, Farm Workers and American Architects, and his Guns in America series, a mini indoor installation.
