Jeff Sullivan (born November 15, 1968) is an American musician[1][2][3] best known for his work as the drummer[4] for the southern rock band Drivin N Cryin,[5][6][7] as well as being the drummer for the early incarnation of blues-rock band The Black Crowes.[8][9][10] Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Sullivan was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2015[11] and has performed and recorded numerous musical collaborations with members of R.E.M.[12], The Black Crowes, The Allman Brothers Band and The Georgia Satellites as well as performed on national tours with Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Widespread Panic, R.E.M., Sonic Youth, The Ramones, Collective Soul, Bob Dylan, Soul Asylum, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers and The Who.
Biography[edit]
Jeff Sullivan grew up in the Atlanta suburb of Dunwoody.[13]17 His music career began at North Springs Charter School of Arts and Sciences where he formed a band called ‘The Disciples’. It was at a Disciples performance in 1986 that Jeff’s drumming talents were noticed by local songwriters Chris Robinson and Rich Robinson. Sullivan was quickly given the offer by them to become the drummer of their band ‘Mr. Crowe’s Garden’.[14] He accepted and performed with them in many of the local Atlanta clubs and recorded on the early demos for A&M Records that would help them (now renamed to The Black Crowes)[15][16] sign their first recording contract with Rick Rubin and his label American Recordings. It was right after recording that demo for A&M Records that Sullivan was approached by local Atlanta up and coming band ‘Drivin N Cryin’[17] who were in the process of signing a multi-album contract with the major label Island Records. Sullivan, being a fan of Kevn Kinney’s songwriting and the power of Drivin N Cryin’s first album jumped at the opportunity to join the band and was at the time (then 18 years old)[18] the youngest artist to sign with Island Records.[19][20]
Career[edit]
Jeff Sullivan’s 20+ year career as Drivin N Cryin’s drummer encompasses 5 major label and 2 independent label albums including his work on 1989’s “Mystery Road” that Paste Magazine calls "One of The 50 Best Southern Rock Albums of All Time”[21] and includes the song “Straight To Hell” that was recently covered by Darius Rucker on his 2017 album “When Was the Last Time”[22] along with Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, and Charles Kelley. Sullivan’s work also includes 1991’s RIAA Gold Certified “Fly Me Courageous"[23], Geffen Records 1995 “Wrapped in Sky”.[24] In addition to his work with Drivin N Cryin, in 1990 Jeff Sullivan worked with Peter Buck on Kevn Kinney’s “Macdougal Blues”[25] and in 1991 he appeared on the Late Night With David Letterman Show25 and worked again with Peter Buck and other members of R.E.M. on Nikki Sudden’s “The Jewel Thief”[26]. In 1995 Sullivan recorded Robin Trower’s “Too Rolling Stoned” with Warren Haynes of The Allman Brothers Band for the High Times compilation album “Hempilation: Freedom is NORML”[27] as well as session drumming on “Information” Mute Record’s album by the band Toenut.[28] In the ‘90s Sullivan also performed session work for Michelle Malone, Ultrababyfat and Seven Simons29 as well as working as a graphic designer on album art work and collaboration in music video production.[29]
In 2012 Jeff Sullivan was honored by the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Georgia along with his bandmates for being “a staple of historical musical excellence here in the State of Georgia” and “music career worthy of recognition.” in Senate Resolution 916 and House Resolution 387.[30]
Jeff Sullivan can currently be seen starring in the 2013 music documentary "Scarred but Smarter” (The Life and Times of Drivin N Cryin).[31]
In 2015 Jeff Sullivan was inducted into The Georgia Music Hall of Fame.[32][33]
