Jeff Verkoeyen is a Canadian software programmer who is best known for his work on Facebook's and Google's iOS apps including the first releases of the Facebook app for the iPad and Google Maps for iOS.

Education[edit]

He graduated from the University of Waterloo with a degree in Computer Science.[citation needed]

Career[edit]

From 2010 to 2011, shortly after graduating from Waterloo, Verkoeyen worked on the first version of the Facebook iPad app while also leading the Three20 open source framework. He left Facebook the summer of 2011 to work on the Nimbus open source framework. [1]

In late 2011, he joined Google as part of the Google+ iOS team. [2]

In June 2012, Apple announced that "its phones would no longer carry Google Maps". [3] Verkoeyen was one of the initial team members tasked with building a new Google Maps app for iOS. [4] Later that year, Google Maps for iOS launched to the public, winning "Best Mobile Application" at The 2012 Crunchies. [5]

Google Maps for iOS was part of the Project Kennedy effort [6]. The user interface components that were built to launch Google Maps for iOS ended up forming the foundation of what became Material iOS,[7] launched publicly as an open source project in 2014. [8]

In 2021, Verkoeyen announced that his team would be turning down the open source Material iOS libraries in favor of aligning more closely with Apple's HIG.[9][10] As part of this shift in approach, Gmail for iOS launched a redesigned settings experience in 2022. [11]
