Jennifer Rubio
Jennifer Rubio is an American businesswoman. She is the co-founder, President, and Chief Brand Officer of Away, a direct-to-consumer lifestyle brand that creates luggage and other travel products.[1] In 2015, Rubio was featured on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for Marketing and Advertising.[2] Rubio has served as head of social media at Warby Parker[3][4] and global director of innovation at fashion company AllSaints.[5][6]
She has been featured in publications including Forbes,[7] Adweek,[8] Wired,[9] The New York Times,[10] The Wall Street Journal,[11] Vogue,[12] TIME.[13] CNN,[14] Mic,[15] Entrepreneur,[16] Travel+Leisure[17] and Fast Company.[18]
Early life
Rubio was born in the Philippines and moved to New Jersey when she was seven years old.[19] She grew up traveling, and lived in seven cities on three continents.[5][20] When she was young, Rubio bought a lemonade stand from another child who lived on her street for $20 she borrowed from her father. She has called it her first merger and acquisition.[1]
Early career
In 2011, Rubio joined Warby Parker and led the company's early content and partnership work as its Head of Social Media.[21] She met Away co-founder Stephanie Korey during her time at Warby Parker.[22][23] In 2013, she left Warby Parker and went to London[24][25] where she was global director of innovation for clothing brand AllSaints.[4][26][27] She spent much of a year traveling for the position.[28]
Before Warby Parker, Rubio held different marketing and social media roles, working for brands on the agency side and in-house.[29] She also taught social media as an adjunct professor at Miami Ad School,[30] and has been a guest lecturer at Hyper Island, New York University, Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern University, and Harvard University.[31]
Away
Rubio co-founded Away, a direct-to-consumer travel company, with Stephanie Korey.[27] The pair met while working at Warby Parker. Vogue announced the creation of Away in November 2015, labeling it "The Perfect Carry-On."[32] By 2017, Rubio and Korey had raised $31 million, making it one of the largest seed financed female-backed startups.[33]
Rubio was included on the 2015 Forbes 30 Under 30 list for Marketing and Advertising.[2] In 2017, she was named on the Inc. 30 under 30 list.[23] In June 2018, Rubio received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year 2018 New York Award.[34]
