Mac Ewart (born February 24, 1993) is an American entrepreneur, philanthropist, biologist, and student of medicine. Mac is currently the chief executive officer for Arlumen Health, and the founder and president of the national Future Physicians of America organization.[1] [2]
Education[edit]
Texas Tech University[edit]
Ewart graduated number one in his class at Texas Tech University from the College of Biological Sciences with a 4.0 GPA as Latin Honors Suma Cum Laude.[3]
Professional Career[edit]
Patriot Engineering[edit]
Ewart worked for Patriot Engineering from 2010 to 2012.[4]
Biologist and Dengue Fever Virus Research[edit]
Ewart began his biological research at Texas Tech University from 2015 to 2017, continuing on through his time at University of North Texas Health Science Center in 2018, 2019, and 2020. In 2019 he was brought into the university's pediatric research program for adolescent and young adult cancer research,[5] which was cosponsored by the Rutledge Foundation.[6] He remained a researcher for this project through 2020.
Ewart's Dengue Fever Virus research was a large project that coordinated data from Texas with data from Venezuela where the research was undertaken in the summer of 2015. The results of this study determined that Venezuela's aggressive deforestation of the Amazon, in the Venezuelan state of Bolívar, led to a large migration of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to the more densely-populated northern shoes of Venezuela. This migration was found to be largely to blame for the sharp increase in Dengue Fever cases observed in Venezuela's population and their trading partners up to the year 2015.[7]
The Venezuelan Dengue Fever Virus data was then applied to Texas, and large field studies were conducted by Texas Tech University at the Waco, Texas, wetlands in McLennan County - this became known as the McLennan County Mosquito project or the "MCoM project" for short.[8] The applied results found that the state of Texas had the species variability and richness to sustain the Dengue Fever Virus should vectors sufficiently introduce it to the region. Other biologists applied this finding to determine that Global Warming could contribute to the introduction of various tropical diseases once not found in the southern United States.
Ewart's current work with adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients centers around epidemiological data extrapolated from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program or "SEER" program for AYA cancer patients.[9] The preliminary results have demonstrated that AYA cancer patients' therapies are lagging behind in progress when compared with pediatric and adult patient populations.
Entrepreneurship[edit]
In 2015 Ewart formalized the creation of the national organization known as the Future Physicians of America (FPA) organization. The organization began its first chapter at Texas Tech University, and quickly spread across America. The organization's self-proclaimed purpose states that it "...exists to inform premedical students about medical school and medicine in general. FPA also seeks to give college students a chance to immerse into the attitude of selfless service demanded of physicians in every walk of life. Such immersions, accomplished through medical service opportunities and various other forms of activities, allow one to find the inner servant of the Hippocratic Oath."[10]
In 2018 Ewart launched the beginnings of a new healthcare system in the state of Texas, this system would come to be called Arlumen Health. The official website for Arlumen Health states that the company's nascence was as an idea put into motion by Mac Ewart in 2010, and that the company is currently in the investment stage of development. Ewart is the current chief executive officer, and under his leadership the health system has adopted what Ewart state are "Arlumen's Three Tenets of Wellness" being that the company places emphasis on the motto "Listen. Love. Serve.", which has been the featured slogan for Arlumen Health's first commercial that ran in early 2020. Under Ewart's leadership the company has grown from an idea into a future for health in the state of Texas.
Philanthropy[edit]
Waco, Texas[edit]
Ewart has devoted himself to bettering the lives of the underprivileged students of the inner-city areas of Waco, Texas. His efforts have largely centered on ensuring Waco Independent School District students have access to quality education through the sponsorship and volunteerism of after-school tutoring programs.[11]
