Jeremy Harrington (born September 22, 1985), also known as Jeremy Elbertson and better known by his online alias Jerma985 or Jerma, is an American Twitch streamer, internet personality, and former YouTuber. He is known for his unconventional approach to livestreaming[1] and has been called a "renowned Twitch jester".[2] Harrington is considered a variety streamer and often plays games from several genres, including horror and virtual reality.

Early life[edit]

Harrington was born on September 22, 1985 in Boston, Massachusetts. During his late teens and early twenties, Harrington was unsure of what to focus on for his career. With a lifelong interest in performance, he aspired to become an actor or a director. He began working different jobs in order to immerse himself in the performance industry, such as being a wedding videographer. In his late twenties, Harrington discovered YouTube, which became a hobby of his and allowed for him to use his performing talents.[3]

Career[edit]

YouTube[edit]

Harrington created his main YouTube account in 2011, which originally focused on comedic Team Fortress 2 gameplay. He later branched out, uploading videos about poorly received games such as Raven's Cry as well as non-gaming videos like "Rat Movie: Mystery of the Mayan Treasure", a 3D Movie Maker short that gained more than 2 million views.[4]

Twitch[edit]

Harrington "decided to transition to Twitch somewhere in 2015-2016."[5] Since then, his channel has gained over 500,000 followers and more than 15 million total views.[6]

Although his channel focuses mainly on video games, Harrington has done several live-action streams that have been compared to performance art. These include "Meet the Elbertsons", in which he had his supposedly real family over to his house for an awkward livestreamed dinner;[7] "The Greatest Show on Earth", which let viewers control carnival games, including a dunk tank and a ring toss, through chat similarly to Twitch Plays Pokémon;[8] and "The Wonders of Archaeology", in which Harrington and paleontologist Joshua Bonde from the Nevada Science Center excavated geodes in the Nevada desert; it also featured a parody of Pokémon cards which was mentioned in Japanese media.[9] "The Wonders of Archaeology" was noted by Kotaku as "funny, wholesome, weirdly educational entertainment" and "wholly unlike anything anyone has done on Twitch before."[10]

Voice acting[edit]

Harrington has worked as a voice actor in a few indie games. His roles include the Horse Lord in Apotheon[11] and the Engineer in Cryptark[12]
