Jerome Polin Sijabat (born 2 May 1998), is an Indonesian YouTuber, internet celebrity, and entrepreneur. Jerome is known after starting a YouTube channel called Nihongo Mantappu which shares his personal life as an Indonesian student in Japan. Jerome creates vlog content on how to learn Japanese, mathematics, and his daily life while in Japan.[2] Sijabat studied at Waseda University, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan, the study program of applied mathematics.[3][4]
Early Life[edit]
Jerome Polin was born in Jakarta on May 2, 1998. He is the second son of Marojahan Sintong Sijabat and Chrissie Rahmeinsa. His father is a priest, while his mother is a housewife.[5] Jerome was born close to the riots that occurred in Jakarta in 1998. In 2004, his family moved to the city of Surabaya, East Java. After moving to Surabaya, Jerome and his brother Jehian Panangian Sijabat received elementary and junior high school education at Sekolah Intan Permata Hati, Surabaya, by receiving scholarships,[6] and high school level at SMA Negeri 5 Surabaya.
When he was in the 2nd grade of elementary school, Jerome wanted to study abroad. After graduating from high school, the desire to study abroad experienced problems because his parents had economic limitations, so Jerome tried to take a scholarship program.[7] Initially, he took the scholarship program selection exam at the Singapore Nanyang Technological University in Jakarta. Two months after the test, he passed the selection but only got half the scholarship.[7]
Because the number of scholarships to be received was not full, he canceled taking the scholarship to Singapore. His brother, Jehian suggested that he join a scholarship program from a Japanese company, namely Mitsui–Bussan, which can provide a full scholarship.[6] Jerome then took the selection exam and was declared passed for a scholarship from the Mitsui–Bussan Scholarship program and studied at Waseda University, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan. He received a scholarship support of ¥150,000 or around Rp. 18,900,000 per month.[8]
Career[edit]
In July 2015, Jerome and Jehian created an official LINE@ academic account called 'Math Q&A'. After getting good support from various parties, they decided to open a new official account, and load material from other subjects, besides mathematics.[9]
Jerome started a YouTube channel called Nihongo Mantappu in December 2017. At first, he shared video content discussing Japanese lessons.[10] This channel received a Silver Play Button in 2018 and a Gold Play Button in 2019. In addition to developing a YouTube channel, in April 2021, Jerome and Jehian opened a fruit tea business network called Menantea.[11]
Before Jerome started the Nihongo Mantappu channel, he already had his own YouTube channel with the first video recorded at Dunia Fantasi, Taman Impian Jaya Ancol, North Jakarta in 2016. This channel got a Silver Play Button in 2021.
