Jessica-Anne "Jess" Holdengarde (born 1991) is a South African-born lens-based artist based between the Isle of Lewis and Glasgow, Scotland. Their practice uses sustainable, plant-based darkroom techniques and site-specific approaches to explore photography’s role in responding to environmental, social and economic crises.[1][2]
Career
Holdengarde completed a BFA at the Michaelis School of Fine Art (2016) and an MFA at the Glasgow School of Art (2021).[3][4]
From 7 December 2024 to 8 February 2025, Stills: Centre for Photography in Edinburgh presented Glimmer, described as Holdengarde’s first major UK solo exhibition.[5][2] The show attracted coverage in specialist photography media.[6]
In 2024, Holdengarde was selected as Stills & Verzasca Foto’s artist-in-residence in Switzerland, returning to the Verzasca Valley to develop new work and reflections.[7][8] In August 2025 the University of Stirling announced Holdengarde’s appointment as the University’s Artist in Residence for the 2025–26 year.[1]
