Education and career

Kim, a native of Seoul, earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in dance arts. After graduation, she worked as a dancer and choreographer before transitioning to a Pilates instructor. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in sports science at a university known for producing South Korea’s first Ph.D. in physical education, focusing on the traditional Pilates system.[1]

She began teaching Pilates in 2004 and completed The Work, an advanced classical Pilates teacher-training program directed by Jay Grimes in Los Angeles. Until Grimes’s death in 2024, she continued to train exclusively under his method.[2]

The Work was a Pilates teacher-training course conducted in Los Angeles, personally directed and taught by Jay Grimes, a first-generation disciple of Joseph Pilates.

Activities

Kim leads programs such as POP PILATES™ and Apprentice of Contrology®, both apprenticeship-based Pilates teacher-training systems. She has expanded classical Pilates education both domestically and internationally. POP PILATES™ has been described in South Korean media as a Pilates guide agency based in South Korea.[3] Apprentice of Contrology® is a long-term apprenticeship program lasting two to seven years, directed by Kim through her studio. She has taught internationally in the United States, Canada, Belgium, and Japan etc. She also introduced the Original Class method, a direct delivery of classical Pilates sessions, to the South Korean market.
