Jimjang Deru is Weightlifter who Represents India in the 56Kg event. He has won the Gold medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Apia 2015. He is supported by the GoSports Foundation through the Abhinav Bindra Targeting Performance Programme. He is also the national record holder in the 62Kg category[7]

Early life and background[edit]

Jimjang Deru is a 19-year-old weightlifter hailing from a remote area, West Kameng in Arunachal Pradesh. As a child, Jimjang tried Judo seriously. He went on to become a state level judo player prior to his switch to weightlifting, after being identified by the Army. He hails from a family with 9 siblings. He has been training at the Army sports Institute in Pune since 2010.

Career[edit]

He has won accolades in both National & International competitions. He started competing in the 56 kg category and won Golds in Senior Commonwealth Championship, Youth Commonwealth Championship, Youth Commonwealth Games and Youth Asia Championship in 2015. In 2016, he shifted to 62 kg category where he won Gold again at the 69th Senior National Championship in Tamil Nadu. He is also inducted in the Government of India backed Target Olympic Podium Scheme. He is currently training five days a week at the Pune center under a strict training regime. His daily routine includes three sessions with each session lasting 2-3 hours. His sessions comprise of free workout in the morning, gym & stretching in the afternoon and lifting weights in the evening.[8]
