Jimmy Lim is a New Zealand/Malaysian fashion designer and founder of the Jimmy Lim label, established in Auckland, New Zealand in 1999. He is known for his contemporary womenswear and for presenting collections at fashion events in New Zealand, Malaysia and internationally.
Early life and education
Lim was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia but emigrated to Auckland, New Zealand at an early age, and studied fashion design at the Auckland University of Technology.[1]
Career
Lim launched his eponymous label in 1999 in Auckland. His early work drew attention within the local fashion industry for its unconventional presentation and aesthetic experimental presentation style.
Since establishing his label, Lim has developed a reputation for bold silhouettes, layered construction, and a design philosophy centred on versatility and self-expression.
In 2004, Lim won the Deutz Fashion Design Award for emerging talent at Air New Zealand Fashion Week.[2] He was subsequently named Deutz Fashion Design Ambassador and represented New Zealand at London Fashion Week in 2006.[3]
Lim has presented collections internationally, including at Malaysia International Fashion Week, where he was selected as the only New Zealand designer to showcase his collections in 2008.[1] He later continued to show at regional fashion events such as Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week and Busan Fashion Week.[4]
In 2013, Lim relocated to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he continued operating his fashion label and participating in regional fashion events.[5]
Style
Lim's designs are characterised by modular construction and versatility, with garments designed to be mixed and matched by the wearer. His work frequently incorporates layered silhouettes and draws on influences from contemporary culture and personal experience.[6]
Reception
Lim has been described as part of a "new generation force" in fashion and has represented New Zealand internationally through his work.[3]
