Jishnu Raghavan Alingkil (Malayalam: ജിഷ്ണു; 23 April 1979 – 25 March 2016),[1][2] mononymously known as Jishnu was an Indian actor who predominantly appeared in Malayalam films including Tamil and Hindi films.[3] He was the son of Film actor and director Raghavan. He is the recipient of Kerala Film Critics Awards, Asianet Film Awards and Mathrubhumi Film Awards.[4][5]

After making his debut with Kilipattu (1987)[6] as a child actor Raghavan, garnered recognition through his role in Nammal[7] (2002) and received critical praise.[8] His notable films include Nerariyan CBI (2005), Chakkaramuthu (2006), Nidra (2012) and Annum Innum Ennum (2013).[9][10]

Jishnu had also acted in Short films. He made his Tamil debut in Kallappadam (2015).[11] His Bollywood debut and last film was Traffic (2016).[12][13]

Early life and education

Jishnu was born on 23 April 1979 in Kannur, Kerala to film actor and director Raghavan[14] and Shobha.[15] He has a younger sister named Jyothsna.[16] He did his schooling in Chennai and later at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram.[17] He also had achieved a best student award during his school days[16] and he did B.Tech in Mechanical engineering at NIT in Calicut.[18][19]

Career

Debut and breakthrough (1987; 2002– 2007)

Jishnu began his career as a child artist in Kilipattu which was released in 1987, directed by his father and it was selected for the Indian Panorama.[20] He made his acting debut as a lead actor in Nammal[21][22] which was released in 2002, opposite Siddharth Bharathan,[23] directed by Kamal which turned out to be blockbuster and commercial success gained him recognition and popularity.[24]

His performance in the film Jishnu bags the Kerala Film Critics Award for Best Debut Actor and the Mathrubhumi Film Awards for Best Male Debut.[25] He then played supportive roles in Nerariyan CBI,[26] Pauran,[27] and negative role in Chakkara Muthu. For the latter, he nominated for Asianet Film Award for Best actor in Negative Role.[28][29]

Comeback and commercial success (2011–2014)

After 2007, he had stopped his acting and took a break from the film industry to work on developing Information Technology in rural areas.[30] He later returned to the film industry on 2012 and did supportive roles in Nidra,[31] Ordinary,[32] Banking Hours 10 to 4[33] and won the Kerala Film Critics Award for Second Best Actor.[34] Then, he made a guest appearance in Ustad Hotel.[35]

In 2013, he played as male protagonist in films Annum Innum Ennum[36] and he received Kerala Film Critics Special Jury Mention Award for the film.[37] Then Rebecca Uthup Kizhakkemala[38] with Ann Augustine, it marks his final film in Malayalam Cinema.[39][40]

Foray into other industries (2014–2016)

He also experimented with acting at Barry John Theater Studios in Mumbai.[41] In the same year, he signed his upcoming films Veerappa, Misfit[42] alongside Sidhartha Siva. Indian Coffee House with Nammal co-actor Siddharth Bharathan[43] and iPhone[44] with his father and actor Raghavan, Vineeth and newcomer Sri Devika. But these films shooting has been suspended and doesn't release in theatres at that time he was diagnosed with cancer in January 2014.[45][46]

In 2015, he made his Tamil debut as the lead actor in the 2015 film Kallappadam[47] opposite Lakshmi Priya Chandramouli and it received positive reviews.[48] He made his Bollywood debut in Traffic[49] which was released in 2016 and it also marks his last film.[50][51]

Personal life

He married his college sweetheart, Dhanya Rajan after an 6-7 year relationship on 2007,[52] who was his junior at college and she is also an architect.[53] Their marriage took place on Mukambika temple.[54][55]

Death

Jishnu was diagnosed with throat cancer in January 2014.[56] The cancer went into remission, then relapsed on 2015[57] and he underwent treatment for it.[58] He died on 8:15 A.M at the age of 36 on 25 March 2016 at Amrita Hospital in Kochi.[59][60]

Before his demise, he did a final Facebook post to inspire everyone.[61] He said that: "Being positive and always smiling makes a lot of difference".[4] In his post he described how everything becomes better just by smiling; calling the ICU his second home.[62][63]
