João the Gallician
João the Gallician (anglicized: John the Gallician) was a 16th century Portuguese musketeer serving under Cristóvão da Gama and Emperor Gelawdewos during the Abyssinian-Adal War. In the Battle of Wayna Daga, contemporary sources state that João killed Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi, the leader of the Adal Empire, when he charged alone into the Adalite lines and died avenging his commander Cristóvão da Gama by fatally wounding Ahmad.
