Joan Gramatte
Joan Helen Gramatte (1942) is a graphic designer and entrepreneur. She co-founded Nuestro Grafico Inc. and Nuestro.
She lives in the New York City borough of Manhattan.
Life and work[edit]
Born in 1942 in Chicago, Illinois, Gramatte is a third-generation Chicagoan of German and Scottish descent.
In 1971, Gramatte co-founded Nuestro Grafico Inc. a graphic design company in Washington, DC., catering to the graphical and public relations needs of federal government departments, agencies, and NGOs, as well as developing private industry contracts. These projects in turn helped fund the necessary research and business plan to create the first national, general-interest magazine for Latinos, in English, in the United States: Nuestro.
She was Art Director for the parent company Nuestro Grafico Inc and for the newly formed magazine company Nuestro that first went on sale at newsstands across the country in April 1977. She holds a BFA in Graphic Design from the Rhode Island School of Design.
Since Nuestro and NBR magazines, she has continued as a successful independent graphic designer, illustrator and photographer.
