Joanna Kaczynska
Joanna Kaczynska, is a Polish and British actress, singer, director, producer and writer.
She made her acting debut in the Polish film Wszyscy Swieci.[1][2] and later when she moved to the United Kingdom in Graders.[3] [4][5][6]playing a lead Ania Krol. This role established Kaczynska in the UK as one of the leading Polish actors. In the following years she also played eponymous role in Baobhan Sith[7] and appeared in award-winning NEDs[8][9] directed by Peter Mullan, who later became an important influence in Kaczynska's career[10]
In 2019 her first American film The Informer[11][12][13][14][15] [16][17][18]was released on the 30thAugust in the UK cinemas, following other countries around the world in 2019 and has a release on the 10thJanuary 2020 in the US[19][10][14][15][16][17]. Kaczynska plays Beata Klimek, a wife of Polish mafia boss and performs a song "Bylam Roza".[10][20][21][22][23][24][25][26]
Early Life[edit]
Joanna Kaczynska was born and raised in Poznan, Poland where she started singing as a soloist at age 14. The same year, her poems were published in her school’s anniversary book.
When Kaczynska was 15, she started performing in a theatre in Poznan. At the same time she trained as a singer and won multiple song contests, including French Song Festivals.
At age 17, Kaczynska started modelling, taking part in fashion shows and photoshoots for different brands and magazines. The same year she was on the Polish singing show Szansa na Sukces performing Ryszard Rynkowski’s song "Wypijmy za Bledy".[10]. In high school she was part of the award-winning Francophone Theatre group "Les Renardins"[10]
Kaczynska studied at The Aleksander Zelwerowicz National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw[10]. A year later, when she was 19, she moved to Paris where she lived for a few months to become proficient in French[10]. The same year she returned to Poland and was semi-finalist of Idol Poland[10] [27]where she sang Whitney Houston’s version of the song "I will always love you", Lara Fabien’s "Je t’aime" and Tina Turner’s "The Best".
Kaczynska is fluent in 4 languages: Polish, English, French and Italian and performs in all four languages.
Kaczynska aquired British citizenship in 2014.[10]
Career[edit]
After performing for a few years in theatre in Poznan, Kaczynska made her film debut in Wszyscy Swieci[1][2]. A year later, she took part in Idol Poland where she got to semi-finals.
Move to United Kingdom
When Kaczynska was 21, she moved to the United Kingdom to follow her acting and singing career. At the same time she continued her English Language Studies with Media Performance at University of Bedfordshire and she graduated with BA with Hons.[10]. She currently lives in Glasgow, Scotland[8][9][10][27][19]
In 2010 she studied acting at Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York, where was was taught by Lola Cohen and Geoffrey Horne among others. In 2011 she debuted with a lead role in a feature film Graders.[3][4][5][10] by David Hutchison. A few years later she also played in Hutchison’s second feature Baobhan Sith. Kaczynska played in different BBC productions for TV and radio, including lead roles opposite Juliet Stevenson in Homeless[28][10]. In 2013 Kaczynska presented BBC documentaries about relations between Poland and Scotland, called “The Poland Connection”[10][27]
Kaczynska produced her first short film which she also wrote and directed The Kingdom[29] which is available on AmazonPrime.
Kaczynska performed in Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh and Oran Mor in Glasgow performing one of the leads Katya in Clean.[30][31][10] by Sabrina Mahfouz and also in Pavillion Theatre performing in Billy and Tim and a wee Glesga Ghost[19][8][9]. In 2019 Joanna played Klaudia in Love me Tinder by Catriona Harvey that toured in a few Scottish theatres[32][10]
American debut
In 2019 her first American film production came out in cinemas on the 30thAugust, where Kaczynska plays Beata Klimek, a wife of Brooklyn mafia boss. Kaczynska performs a song "Bylam Roza" in one of the pivotal scenes[10]. Film will be released in January 2020 in the United States.
