Joel Marshall Platt (born November 21, 1938) is an American real estate developer known for his curation of the Sports Immortals Collection.[1][2]

Early Life

Joel Platt was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At the age of four, he was involved in a gasoline explosion that left him bedridden for over a year. During his recovery period, his parents started buying him baseball cards. Platt claims to have had a dream that Babe Ruth visited his bedside and encouraged him to never give up on his recovery and that one day he could be a professional baseball player or build a shrine to honor the greatest athletes.[3][2]

From 1944 to 1956, Joel played baseball until ultimately injuring his arm during his senior year while playing shortstop for Duquesne University. In addition, his collection grew from cards to include autographs, programs, posters and actual game-used sports artifacts.[4][2]

Sports Immortals Collection

Over the years, Platt has met athletes such as Muhammad Ali, Roberto Clemente, Jesse Owens, Red Grange, Satchel Paige and thousands of others.[2] Platt's first curating trip was with Mrs. Honus Wagner in Carnegie, Pennsylvania where she presented him with a bronze of Honus Wagner's hands as well as a signed baseball and other items. In addition, between 1960 and 1985 Platt purchased eight of the largest sports collections at the time to add to the Sports Immortals Collection.[1][2]
