The Sports Immortals Collection is the largest private collection of sports memorabilia on all sports.[citation needed] The collection was curated by American real estate developer Joel Platt. [1] [2]
History[edit]
The collection resulted from Joel Platt being injured in a gasoline explosion at the age of four. During his recovery in the hospital his parents started buying him baseball cards. Platt claims to have had a dream that Babe Ruth visited him at bedside and told him not to give up on his recovery and that one day he could be a major league baseball player or build a museum to honor all of the sports greats.[3][4] From an early age Joel set out to curate mementos from sports legends starting with his first trip at the age of sixteen to visit Mrs. Honus Wagner who presented him with a bronze of Honus Wagner's hands as well as signed baseball and other mementos. Over a sixty year period Joel met numerous sports legends such as Muhammad Ali, Roberto Clemente, Jesse Owens, among others to curate items for his Sports Immortals Collection[5] [4] Between 1960 and 1985 Platt purchased eight of the largest sports collections at the time to be added to the Sports Immortals Collection.[6][4]
Collection[edit]
The Sports Immortals Collection is comprised of game-worn uniforms, autographed balls, cards, bats, caps, helmets, shoes, hockey sticks, skates, pucks, boxing gloves, robes, trunks, championship belts, tennis racquets, golf clubs, stadium seats, tickets, pennants, posters, saddles, boots and racing tires as well as other miscellaneous sports related items.[6][4]
