Joey Newcomb

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Yosef Yisrael Meir "Joey" Newcomb is an American Jewish singer. He is well known for his song "Thank You Hashem" which often was sung after one returned home from the hospital after contracting the coronavirus.

Early life and family[edit]

Newcomb father (and mother) was a Baal teshuva who actually was from Belzer descent. Because of his Chasidic descent he also carried a few traditions over such as having long Peyos and the chassidic garb. Newcomb grew up in Queens as a mainstream Religious Orthodox Jew. Newcomb attended Talmud Torah Siach Yitzchok and for Mesivta he attended Yeshiva Shaarei Arazim in Monsey. Later on he attended Yeshivas Mir in Yerushalayim.[1]

Newcomb began learning the guitar at age thirteen. Because of his guitar obsession (and as a joke) one of his teachers began calling him "Joey" a name that stuck. In his high school years his music and interests were more secular; as he got older his music got more inspirational and traditional. While studying in Yeshivah he headed a few Kumzitz's and was a Ba'al Tefilah.[1]

Newcomb married Chana Gittel Ackerman. Newcomb and his wife and three children[2] lives in the Kew Gardens area of Queens. Being also a Talmid Chacham during the week Newcomb teaches in Ateres Shimon a Yeshiva founded by Mordechai Yehuda Groner.[1]

Musical style[edit]

Newcomb's music style lends itself in part from the style of Shlomo Carlebach, weiving in song, stories and messages all together.

Composition[edit]

Newcomb composes his own songs. He says that he pulls his inspiration from Shlomo Carlebach who composed his songs on stage from just a feeling. Usually his song comes up from an inspiration or feeling within three minutes. Then later he takes the idea or flash and tweaks it until it sound just write.[1][3][4]

Music videos[edit]

Newcomb has created numerous music videos collaborating with many of the Jewish leading singers such as Benny Friedman.[5]
