Joseph Don Spencer (born March 24, 2000) is an American professional boxer. As an amateur, Spencer was a nine time national champion.[1]

Professional career[edit]

Early career[edit]

Spencer made his professional debut on February 17, 2018 against Uriel Gonzalez Angulo. In the closing moments of the opening round, Spencer knocked his opponent down after landing a heavy hook to the body. Spencer continued to pressure his opponent and in the second round, the corner of Gonzalez opted to end the bout after their fighter took sustained damage.[2]Spencer's second bout as a professional was against Ousmane Sylla on April 13, 2018. In the opening twelve seconds of the fight, Spencer knocked his opponent down after landing a left hook to the chin. Moments later, Spencer knocked Sylla down for a second time after connecting with another left hand. Spencer secured the win after landing a combination of punches which put Syalla down for the third time of the opening round.[3]

On June 10, 2018 Spencer fought against Tom Howard. In the first round, Spencer knocked his opponent down after connecting with a right hand. Howard recovered from the knockdown, however Spencer continued to pressurise his opponent and in the final moments of the opening round, Spencer ended the bout the after landing another heavy right hand to the head of Howard.[4]Spencer fought against Bruce Lutchmedial on August 4, 2018. In the second round, Spencer landed a series of body shots which forced Lutchmedial to take a knee midway through the round. Towards the end of the second round, Spencer put his opponent down for a second time after landing a combination of punches to the head. This prompted referee Arthur Mercante to immediately call an end to the bout.[5]

On September 30, 2018 Spencer fought against Cory Macon. Spencer won via knockout in the first round after connecting with a hard left hook.[6]Spencer fought against Brandon Harder on January 13, 2019. Spencer knocked his opponent down three times in the opening two rounds and following the third knockdown, Spencer was declared the winner by way of knockout after the referee called an end to the bout.[7]

Spencer was taken the distance for the first time as a professional when he fought against Osias Vasquez on April 13, 2019. Spencer won via wide unanimous decision after dominating for the duration of the bout.[8][9]Spencer fought against Akeem Black on June 23, 2019. Spencer was taken the distance for the second bout in a row as he won via unanimous decision.[10]

On September 28, 2019 Spencer fought on the undercard of Errol Spence Jr. vs. Shawn Porter in a bout against Travis Gambardella. Spencer knocked his opponent down twice in the opening round. Just under a minute into the third round, Spencer was declared the winner after landing a left hand to the head of Gambardella which forced the referee to step in and end the bout.[11][12][13]On January 18, 2020 Spencer fought against Erik Spring. Spencer won via unanimous decision after comfortably outboxing his opponent throughout the duration of the bout.[14][15]

Spencer fought against Shawn West on August 22, 2020. In the second round, Spencer landed a combination of punches to the head which forced his opponent to take a knee. Despite recovering from the knockdown, Spencer knocked West down for a second time after landing another combination of punches to the head midway through the fourth round. This promted the referee to call an end to the bout, despite the protests of West.[16][17]On January 30, 2021 Spencer fought against Isiah Seldon. In the opening round, Spencer landed a right hand which put his opponent on the canvas. Seldon managed to beat the referees count, however, Spencer soon secured the win after landing another heavy right hand which knocked his opponent down for a second time in the opening round, which resulted in the referee ending the bout immediately.[18]

Spencer was taken the distance for the fourth time as a professional when he fought against James Martin on July 31, 2021. Spencer won via unanimous decision after controlling the majority of the bout.[19][20]On December 25, 2021 Spencer fought against Limberth Ponce. In the fifth round, Spencer hurt his opponent after landing a left-right combination to the head of Ponce. This combination of punches was quickly followed by another heavy right hand which sent Spencer’s opponent to the canvas. Following the knockdown, the referee promptly stepped in and ended the bout.[21][22]
