History[edit]

John Adams Middle School was named after John Adams, the 2nd president of the United States of America. The school was established in 1960 as a junior high school serving grades 6-9. In 1984, 9th grade was moved into J.P. Stevens High School, once a senior high school, making JAMS a middle school.

Students[edit]

Most of JAMS's students come from James Madison Intermediate (JMI) and Martin Luther King Elementary (MLK) schools. In the school's first 20 years, the students were mainly Caucasian with an African-American minority. In the 80's, JAMS started having more Asian-Americans ( mostly Indian-Americans ) students like the rest of Edison as a whole, which led to a majority of Asian-American students in the school. Currently, the racial breakdown of the school is 70% Asians, 17% White, 10% African-American, 2% Hispanic, and 1% of other races. In John Adams, 10% of students are eligible for reduced-priced or free lunch, while NJ has 30% of students eligible for reduced-priced or free lunch. In the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJASK),more than 80% of students scored Proficient and Advanced Proficient in Math and Language Arts Literacy, greatly higher than the state's average. After completing 8th grade, JAMS students along with students from Woodrow Wilson Middle School, go on to J.P. Stevens High School.
