John M. Cox is a retired American aircraft pilot, former flight instructor, former check pilot, former test pilot, former aircraft accident investigator, and active air safety expert who has flown over 14,000 hours, with over 10,000 hours in command of jet airliners. He has served as an aviation expert for programs such as Mayday (also known as Air Disasters in the United States and Air Crash Investigation in other parts of the world) and Why Planes Crash. His expertise has also been called upon by many TV shows, newspapers, and magazines, including ABC News, NBC News, CBS News, CNN, Discovery Channel, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Time, and many more.[1]
Cox has made 21 appearances on Mayday as of August 2022, not including compilation episodes.[2]
Career[edit]
Cox's career as a commercial airplane captain lasted from 1980 to 2004; he was certified to fly the Airbus 320, Boeing 737, Fokker 28, and the Citation 500 (among others).[3] After retiring from flying, he has shared his vast technical expertise with dozens of TV shows, newspapers, and magazines as an aviation expert. He was featured in the 2022 Netflix documentary Downfall: The Case Against Boeing, which explored the Boeing 737 Max groundings.[2]
