John Handley

John Handley was an Irish-American lawyer, judge, and coal magnate. He was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1835. He visited Winchester, Virginia many times and admired the city’s Scotch-Irish heritage. He died in 1895. In his will, he left money to Winchester for the construction of Handley Library and John Handley High School, both of which were named in his honor.
