John William Klatt (born 7 February 1942) is a well-known Australian professional golfer from Brisbane, Australia.
He completed his PGA apprenticeship under Arthur Gazzard, at Victoria Park Golf Club, becoming a full member of the Australian PGA. In 1963, he was appointed head professional at Virginia Golf Club, an 18-hole facility in the northern suburbs of Brisbane.[1] At just 21 years of age, he was one of the youngest head professionals in Australia at the time. He stayed at Virginia for 42 years, retiring in 2003.
Klatt devoted much of his time to the development of junior golf, conducting regular clinics at the club with students including a young Greg Norman[2][3], with US PGA Championship winner Wayne Grady and former US PGA Tour player Andrew Buckle also spending some of their formative golfing years at the 27-hole parkland layout.[4]
A competitive player in his prime, John juggled his club professional duties while competing regularly in local PGA Tour events. Notable victories included the 1967 City Of Brisbane Open, and the Queensland PGA Championship in 1972 and 1974, as well as numerous Pro Am wins.[citation needed]
Upon turning 50, he competed on the Australian, Japanese and European Seniors Tour. His best finishes on the European Seniors Tour were T30 in the 1992 Seniors British Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes, T5 in the PGA Seniors Championship at Royal Dublin and a T2 finish in the 1994 Australia Seniors Open at Yarra Yarra.[citation needed]
Klatt should also be remembered for his role in developing the Sunshine Tour. He was a pioneer of the so-called 'Troppo Tour' when it was a fledgling series of Pro-Ams in Northern Queensland in the 1960s. He also served as Chairman of the Queensland PGA and sat on the board of the Australian PGA, alongside Norman von Nida and Peter Thompson.[5]
