John Leask & Son, also trading as Leasks of Lerwick, was a bus and coach operator based in Gremista near Lerwick on the Shetland Islands, Scotland. The operator closed in August 2020 due to the retirement of its owners.

History[edit]

John Leasks & Son was founded in 1919 by John R. Leask and son James as a two-car taxi service, operating its first buses in 1928. The company opened a travel agency, John Leask Travel, in Lerwick in 1936, following the launch of the first air services to the Shetland Islands by Allied Airways,[1] which in 1998 and 1999 won the Agent of the Year award at the British Regional Airways travel industry awards.[2] The agency was closed down at the end of 2011 due to a lack of business owing to competition by online booking agencies, leading to the loss of four full-time and three part-time jobs from its office in Lerwick.[3] A car rental operation was also maintained during the 1990s, with Subaru Justys made available to hire from either Sumburgh Airport or Lerwick town for travellers on ferries.[4]

In March 2020, it was announced that Leasks would cease operations due to the retirement of its owners Peter and Andrew Leask. Services ceased on 16 August 2020, with former Leasks routes across the islands being split between four operators and a majority of buses and coaches from the 19-vehicle fleet sold to operators on the mainland.[5][6]

Operations and fleet[edit]

As of the company's closure in August 2020, John Leask & Sons operated a fleet of 19 buses and coaches.[6] The bus fleet consisted of a handful of Alexander Dennis Enviro200s, Alexander Dennis Enviro200 MMCs and a Wright StreetLite, as well as a pair of MCV Evolution-bodied Volvo B7RLEs.[1][7]
