John Leslie Ogilvie Holden FSAScot FRSA FCollP (1940 – 2003) was a British barrister, academic and historian who was Chancellor of the Diocese of Manchester and served as President of the Lancashire Parish Register Society (1999–2003).
Career[edit]
Holden was educated at the University of London where he obtained his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree, and then proceeded to the University of Cambridge where he gained his second Law degree (LLM). Whilst teaching, he also studied for an Education qualification (PGCE), and later also studied Canon Law at the University of Aberystwyth, and also studied at the University of Lancaster (MLitt). He practiced as a barrister for many years, and was later also Lecturer in Law at Manchester Metropolitan University. In the 1990s, he was appointed Chancellor of the Diocese of Manchester.[1]
Activities[edit]
Holden was involved in various societies, including the Harleian Society. He was a Member of the Chetham Society, became a Council Member in 1989 (until his death) and was elected Treasurer, serving from 1989 to 1994.[2] He was also a Member of the Lancashire Parish Register Society, serving as Council Member, then Secretary from 1994 to 1999 and later as president from 1999 until his death in 2003.[1]
Honours[edit]
Holden was also honoured by several institutions. He was elected a Fellow of the College of Preceptors, Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, and was also elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He was also appointed as an honorary lay Canon of Manchester Cathedral.[1]
