John Liew (born 1967/68) is a billionaire co-founder and hedge fund manager of AQR Capital Management, the second-largest hedge fund in the world (as of 2016) by assets under management.[2] He is also a trustee of the University of Chicago where he met his future wife.[3]
Early life and education[edit]
Both of Liew's parents were professors, and he was encouraged to pursue a career as an academic.[4] Liew attended the University of Chicago where he earned a BA in economics and was elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa, followed by an MBA and a PhD in finance.[5] While in school he met his wife, who attended both the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools and the college.[3]
Career[edit]
Liew started his career at Trout Trading, developing "quantitative market-neutral stock-selection strategies".[5]
Liew was hired by Goldman Sachs as a portfolio manager in the asset management division where he developed and managed quantitative investment strategies. In 1998, Liew joined fellow UChicago and Goldman Sachs alumnus Cliff Asness, who studied for an MBA and PhD under Nobel laureate Eugene Fama, to found AQR Capital Management.[6] [7]

Liew is married to Serena J. Liew, a fellow UChicago alum. They have two children,[3] and live in Greenwich, Connecticut.[1]
