John Kristian Mues (born November 18, 1973) is an American businessman and engineer, former naval officer, fourth generation Montanan, Montana public school teacher in an underserved community, and political candidate for United States Senate for Montana in 2020[1].

Over a 7-year career as an active duty nuclear submarine officer, John was three times deployed overseas and participated in numerous highly classified missions. For the opening combat phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom, he coordinated a large task force of attack submarines. He also served as a submarine liaison for the SEALs supporting the global war on terrorism, and a post-command exercise manager at NATO. He was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal, two Navy & Marine Corps Commendation medals, and a Navy & Marine Corps Achievement medal, among other honors. He also attained Army Airborne Parachutist and Navy SCUBA Diver Qualifications.[2]

John graduated with academic honors in English while lettering in Division I sports from the U.S. Naval Academy. He then completed the Naval Nuclear Power Program - consisting of Nuclear Power School, Nuclear Power Prototype, and Prospective Nuclear Engineer Officer School - resulting in U.S. Department of Energy certification as a Nuclear Engineer Officer. He also studied economics, finance, and business at the London Business School in the United Kingdom, earning a Master of Business Administration.

Business career

In 2008, John entered the private sector as a senior engineer in the energy sector, where he has worked for the past 11 years. He has worked in upstream oil and gas, zero-emissions fuel cells, and wind farm development in the private sector.

Humanitarian Service

Provided pro bono business consulting to several organizations, including a nonprofit dedicated to reducing senior citizen loneliness.

Public School Teacher

While overseas, John applied to the Troops-to-Teachers program and worked towards a teaching certificate through Montana State University. Two months after being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, he began two years of differentiated service to the United States as a high school math and English teacher on the Ft. Belknap Indian Reservation in North Central Montana.
