John Gilmour Nutt (born 19 August 1934) is an Australian Engineer and former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Ove Arup and Partners. He is most notable for his role in overseeing the design, construction and engineering of the Sydney Opera House. Nutt helped pioneer the use of computers in engineering practice in Australasia.

Career[edit]

Originally from Brisbane, Nutt attended Queensland University and later succeeded in a Bachelor of engineering. In 1963, Nutt helped found the Australian Practice of the Arup Group, later becoming Chairman and Chief executive officer in 1973. During his leadership, Nutt oversaw the design and analysis of many high-rise buildings across Australia including the National Australia Bank of Melbourne, Westpac Plaza, Governor Phillip Tower, and Governor Macquarie Tower. During the 1970s and 1980s, Nutt was instrumental in the construction of the Sydney Opera House, leading the design of the building's roof and overseeing the construction and completion of the building in 1973.

Awards and recognition[edit]

Nutt is regarded as one of Australia's most influential engineers. Throughout his career, Nutt has been awarded a Centenary Medal, a President's Award, and a Lifetime Achievement Award. Nutt has appeared in media such as Richard Hammond's Engineering Connections in 2009 and features in the Engineer's Australia Centenary book "Anything is Possible": 100 Australian Engineering Leaders.

In 1998, Nutt was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his services and contributions to engineering, and was awarded the Centenary Medal. In 2001, Nutt was awarded the John Connell Gold Medal of Engineers Australia in recognition of his engineering leadership and role in developing many of Australia's most significant buildings.
