John P. Bergin (November 10, 1961 – September 11, 2001) was a firefighter with the New York City Fire Department (FDNY).[1]

Biography[edit]

A lifelong Staten Island resident, Bergin served first with the No. 6 truck in Manhattan and later with Rescue Company 5 of Staten Island. He along with 10 other firefighters from Rescue Company 5 were killed during fire and rescue operations at the World Trade Center following the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001. Anticipating retirement in two years, in June 2001 Bergin bought and began renovating a local bar, the Grand City Tavern, alongside a business partner. At the time of his death, renovations were two weeks away from completion.[1][2]

Memorials[edit]

On January 7, 2003 the New York City Council renamed 97 "thoroughfares and public places" in New York including renaming Beach Avenue in Staten Island to Firefighter John Bergin Place.[3]

Bergin's name can be found on panel S-6 of the South Memorial Pool at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City and the 22nd line of the first row on the September 11, 2001 plaque at the National Fallen Firefighters Monument in Emmitsburg, MD.[4][5]
