The Honourable Justice John Leslie Snaden is a judge of the Federal Court of Australia, sitting in the Melbourne registry. He was appointed on 29 April 2019.[1][2]

Early life and education

Snaden graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1999 with a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce (General Management). He was admitted to practice as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria in 2000.[1]

Legal career

From 2000 to 2005 Snaden practised as a solicitor, initially at Tanya Cirkovic & Associates and later at Clayton Utz. Before his judicial appointment he was a member of the Victorian Bar, practising principally in industrial relations and employment law across Australian jurisdictions.[1]

Federal judicial service

On 22 February 2019 the Attorney-General announced Snaden’s appointment to the Federal Court, with his commission commencing on 29 April 2019 in the Melbourne registry.[3][4] A ceremonial sitting to welcome him took place on 29 April 2019; the Court has published the transcript.[5] The Australian Government Directory records his commission from that date, and a Senate estimates paper lists his appointment among Melbourne registry judges since 2013.[6][7]

Notable matters and coverage

Snaden has presided over matters in industrial relations and employment law among other national practice areas. In 2022 he dismissed proceedings brought by former staff of Senator Jacqui Lambie alleging adverse action; the decision and subsequent costs ruling received national media coverage.[8][9][10] A searchable list of his published judgments is maintained by the Court.[11]
