John Theodore-Eden (born November 9, 1988) is a producer, actor and speaker, and Cyprus's first black TV host.[1][2] He was the producer and presenter of "Theodore's TV Show" and "Cyprus in the Spotlight", both of which were broadcast on Channel T, a satellite network in Cyprus.[2]
He is known by the pseudonyms "Bafidi Metin", referring to Paphos, Cyprus, and "Adanali Metin", referring to Adana, Turkey.[3]
Early life
Theodore-Eden was born on November 9, 1988, in Delta State, Nigeria, the fourth of seven children. His father, Joseph Okpisi Edevu, is a retired businessman who owned Edevson Commercial Limited, a company that distributes electronics and owned franchises. His mother, Susanna Edevu, is a livestock farmer. He interacted with people of different nationalities from a young age because his father's business employed many foreigners.[4]
Education
After his elementary and high school education, Theodore-Eden studied international relations at Cyprus International University in Nicosia.[5]
In March 2014, he met a peace journalism expert during a training session in Cyprus. The expert, a communications professor at Park University in Parkville, Missouri, facilitated Theodore-Eden's relocation to the United States a few months later.[6] He briefly studied international politics at Park University before moving to New York City, and then to Washington, D.C., where he planned to continue studying international affairs and diplomacy.[7]
Career
Theodore-Eden left Nigeria as a young man to work as a personal assistant to Fred Agogo-Mawuli, a chaplain from Ghana and Douglas Jarvi from Scotland.[8] He briefly returned to Nigeria, where he was made a public relations officer for the Delta South Youth Coalition.[2]
He moved to Nicosia, Cyprus, with the aid of a pastor, Ayo Oritsejafor, and Comrade Oyibo, then the mayor of Sapele, Nigeria. After studying at Cyprus International University, he began visiting TV channels to discuss starting his own show. In November 2012, he was hired by Channel T as a presenter and co-producer of "Theodore’s TV Show".[9][10] On the program, Theodore-Eden conducted interviews and short conversations with people on the streets[11] about culture, history, personal life and other topics.[12][13] The program aired until December 2013.[4]
In the same year, he made his acting debut in Saka Geliyor Gemez, a Cypriot comedy series.
In January 2014, Theodore-Eden began to produce and host another program, "Cyprus in the Spotlight",[14] which focused on the culture, people and places of Cyprus and was telecasted in three languages: English, Greek and Turkish. The program stopped airing in July, when he left Cyprus. Theodore-Eden is a member of the Center for Global Peace Journalism.[15][not in citation given] He is also on the board of the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research.[4]
