John Thomson Club
The John Thomson Club is an unofficial list of Scottish goalkeepers who have kept at least 100 clean sheets in the Scottish top flight, in the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup, in European games for Scottish clubs, or for the Scotland national team.[1] Inspired by the Lev Yashin Club, it is named in honour of John Thomson, a young Scottish goalkeeper who tragically died whilst playing for his club aged just 22.[2][3][4]
History
John Thomson made his Celtic debut aged just 18 and made over 200 appearances for the club. Considered a brilliant prospect, he made his debut for Scotland in 1930 and represented his country on four occasions, keeping three clean sheets.[5] Thomson was fatally injured whilst playing in the Old Firm derby in 1931, dying aged 22.
Counting
Clean sheets are counted in the following matches:
- Championship - clean sheets in the top league of Scottish football.
- Cup - clean sheets in the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup.
- European cups - clean sheets in European Champion Clubs Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, Cup Winners Cup and Intertoto Cup for Scottish clubs.
- National team - clean sheets for Scottish national team at senior level in official matches.
Members of The John Thomson club have kept a total of at least 100 clean sheets in the Scottish top division, in the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup, representing Scottish clubs in Europe, or playing for the Scottish national team.
