John Walters (Sportscaster) is an American sports broadcaster, who is currented the Director of Broadcasting in the Iowa State University Athletics Department. Walters is a four-time recipient of the National Sports Media Association's Iowa Sportscaster of the Year award, receiving the honor in 2003, 2005, 2011 and 2015[1].

Walters serves as the "Voice of the Cyclones" as the radio play-by-play announcer for Iowa State football and men's basketball, a role which he took over from Pete Taylor after Taylor's unexpected death on March 5, 2003[2]. Walters filled in for Taylor for the remainder of the 2002-03 season, before taking over the role full-time in June 2003[3], with his first radio broadcast as full-time play-by-play announcer being Iowa State's season opening football game vs. Northern Iowa[4].

Prior to taking up a full-time role at Iowa State in 2012[5], Walters was a staple of sports media in the Des Moines, Iowa area. From 1996-2012, Walters was the Sports Director at WOI-DT in West Des Moines. Among Walters' roles at WOI included being the play-by-play for Iowa State men's basketball television broadcasts, a role he often had alongside Cyclone legend Gary Thompson. In 2002, Walters was honored by the IAHSAA with the organization's Sports Media Award, recognizing media members for their efforts in coverage, promotion and support of high school athletics in activities in Iowa[6]

Walters has also worked at KCCI in Des Moines, where he worked for 13 years from 1983-96. The first seven of which he spent with Taylor, who was the Sports Director at KCCI until he went to work for Iowa State Athletics as its Director of Fundraising in 1990.

Walters, a native of Glen Ellyn, Illinois[7], is a 1984 graduate of Drake University in Des Moines, where he got his Bachelor's Degree in Journalism[8]. He was the radio play-by-play announcer for Drake women's basketball from 1985-89 and Drake men's basketball from 1989-96[7]. He currently resides in Ankeny with his wife, with whom he has had three daughters.
