John Wilson (British Free Corps)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

John Eric Wilson was an Unterscharführer[1] in the Waffen-SS British Free Corps during the Second World War. He had been born in October 1921, the son of a Lancashire chemist. A member of No. 3 Commando, he landed at Bova Marina with a small party under the command of Lt J. F. Nixon on the night of 27 August 1943, with a mission to capture a German or Italian prisoner, check to see if one bridge was prepared for demolition, blow another, and conduct a beach reconnaissance for further operations. Unfortunately for Wilson, the group was compromised on 28 August and he was captured.[2] He 'decided, after some initial hesitation, to stay on' in the BFC in December 1943.[3] '[A] fit and physically impressive man,' he conducted PT lessons for the Corps.[4] He acted as the senior BFC NCO after the dismissal of Thomas Freeman.[5] When the Corps was sent on active service on 8th March 1945, Wilson 'refused to go to the front and engineered for himself the role of liaison between the Corps and the Berlin office.'[6] 'Wilson’s ostensible job as liaison officer [was] to keep the flow of [Red Cross] parcels arriving to the front, but all he [did] ... was steal a few before deserting Berlin on 9 April' towards Bremen.[7] He gave evidence in the court martial of Roy Courlander on 1 October 1945.[8] He received a sentence of ten years' imprisonment after the War.[9]
