John Winston Spanier (21 July 1930 – 12 August 2016) was a German born American historian, bestselling author, academic and university professor.
Life
He was born in Bad Oyenhausen, Germany in 1930 to William Moritz and Elise Rosenberg Spanier.[1]
Due to antisemitism in Nazi Germany, his family emigrated, first to the Netherlands and then to the United Kingdom. Thus he grew up in England during most of the duration of the Second World War.[2]
In 1947, his entire family immigrated to the United States and settled in Hartford, Connecticut.[3]
Education
He was awarded a scholarship to Harvard University where he completed his B.A. cum laude (1952) and M.A. (1953) degrees respectively.[4]
He completed his Ph.D at Yale University in 1957.[5]
Career
He served as a professor of history at the University of Florida, Gainesville.[6][7]
