John Y. Lee

John Y. Lee (Hangul이종연; born 1928 – ) was a Republic of Korea Army lieutenant who served during Korean War as an interpreter officer in United States Marine Corps.

Early life[edit]

He was born at Hwanghae Province in 1928 and he entered Korea University.[1]

Military career[edit]

The Korean War broke out on 25 June 1950 when he was a sophomor, he joined ROK Army and became an interpreter officer in July 1950.

He was attached to the 5th Marine Regiment as part of the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade.

For Inchon Landing, 5th Marine Regiment was attached to 1st Marine Division, he was also attached to 1st Marine Division Headquarters.[2]

He was involved in Battle of Pusan Perimeter, Battle of Inchon and Battle of Chosin Reservoir.[3]

Especially, his activities during Battle of Chosin Reservoir was depicted in the book of Martin Russ - Breakout: The Chosin Reservoir Campaign, Korea 1950.

Later life[edit]

In 1954, he left the ROK Army and traveled to the U.S. to attend Yale University.

He became a lawyer after graduating from the Yale Law School.[4]

In 1983, he became the founding member of 'The Chosin Few'.

Awards and decorations[edit]

In 1951, he received a Legion of Merit.
