Johnnie Alan Guilbert (born August 28, 1997) known professionally as Johnnie Guilbert, is an American YouTube personality and musician. He is known for his self-titled YouTube channel,.[1] as well as being one of the founding members of the collaborative YouTube channel My Digital Escape.
Early Life[edit]
Guilbert was born in San Jose, California[2]. His father passed away due to cancer when he was 11[2]. He struggled with schooling due to his dyslexia and depression, and dropped out of high school in his sophomore year[2]. He moved out of his family home to Nebraska at age 16, and then to Los Angeles at age 17[2].
YouTube Career[edit]
Guilbert started posting videos to his self-titled YouTube channel in 2013, with many of his videos consisted of vlogs, challenges, and tutorials. He was also one of the YouTube guests at Warped Tour UK in 2015, as one of their "Rising Stars of the Vlogosphere"[3]. He has been featured on several separate YouTube channels, including Buzzfeed in 2016[4].
As of 2024, his self titled channel has amassed 2.3 million subscribers[5].
My Digital Escape[edit]
Guilbert was one of the founding members of collaborative YouTube channel My Digital Escape, alongside BryanStars[2]. Guilbert met future collaborator and roommate BryanStars as a fan at the second "BryanStars Tour", in 2012[6].
"I was a big fan of him. The reason why I met Bryan was because I went to his show on the Bryan Stars Tour which he did, he did his own tour, and I went to the second tour... And that's how I got to meet him."[6]
He moved to Nebraska and then later to Los Angeles with Stars at age 17 to pursue his career as a YouTuber and musician[2].
The first official post made by My Digital Escape was made on November 28th, 2014. A year and a half after the channel's creation and following multiple changes in lineup, My Digital Escape announced their disbandment in the video "Saying Goodbye"[7] in 2016, citing issues with the pressure of frequent uploads.
Later, Guilbert disclosed how other issues surrounded management, money, and the "toxic mindset"[2] that surrounded the channel contributed to the downfall of My Digital Escape. The demise of My Digital Escape as a pop culture phenomenon has been widely discussed across the 'emo' and 'alternative' online communities[8].
Music Career[edit]
Guilbert was first inspired to start making music by the emo and alternative bands he first found a connection with, including Panic! at the Disco, who he first saw on MTV.[2]. His first album he ever purchased was Pretty. Odd.[2] This discovery led him to find other musicians such as The Ready Set, who Guilbert credits with inspiring him to start playing the acoustic guitar[2]. Later, Guilbert would go on to record his first album with The Ready Set[2].
Guilbert's first EP, "Not So Perfect", was released on 27th November 2015,[9] and was recorded at Talent Shoppe Records.[10] The EP peaked at number 26 on the Billboard independent albums chart.[11]
Guilbert is also one half of the band Til Death Do We Part, alongside Jake Bateman.[12] They released their first EP, titled "We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat", on the 13th October 2017.[13] Til Death Do We Part have released five singles since their debut EP, between 2018 and 2022[13].
Guilbert's first full length album, titled "I Could Sleep Here, I Could Die Here", consisted of eight songs. It was released on July 6th 2018[9]. His second full length album, "The Last Thing I Want Is Help", was released December 11th 2020[9]. His third full length album, "It Was All For Nothing", was released September 16th 2022. It included features from artists Shannon Taylor and Jake Bateman[9].
Guilbert performed live for Idobi Radio studios twice in 2022,[14] and later became the face of the radio station's billboard media campaign in 2023[15]. He also featured in the music video for "Believe" by Dope in 2022,[16] as well as the music video for "Under the Influence(r)" by The Summer Set in 2023[17].
Guilbert's most recent single, "Vampire", was released on February 14th 2024[18]
Personal Life[edit]
Guilbert has been open about his struggles with depression and anxiety[19]. He has spoken about how making YouTube videos and receiving comments has both positively[2] and negatively[20] impacted his mental health:
"That's still like how I kinda cope with my depression sometimes... But like I mean sometimes I just like to kinda film a video and cry, y'know? I think the best thing about that is I can open up and help people... So it helps me and helps people."[2]

Guilbert is straight.[21]. He also has dyslexia[2]
Guilbert was previously involved in a relationship with Alex Dorame, fellow member of My Digital Escape.
