Jon Wilner (born 1967) is an American sports writer for The San Jose Mercury News. He is particularly known for his coverage of the Pac-12 Conference.
Wilner is an AP Top 25 voter for college football and college basketball as well as a Heisman Trophy voter.[1]
Early life and education
Wilner grew up in Bethesda, Maryland. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania.[2]
Career
Wilner covered Arizona Wildcats men's basketball for the Arizona Daily Star from 1989 to 1995.
Wilner moved to Los Angeles to cover UCLA Bruins football and men's basketball from 1995 to 2000 for the Los Angeles Daily News.
In 2000, Wilner began working in San Jose at The Mercury News. In over two decades at the publication, he has covered the Stanford Cardinal beat, other Bay Area colleges and the Pac-12 Conference. Wilner is best known for his coverage of Pac-12 Conference football, where he authors The Pac-12 Hotline for the Bay Area News Group and is circulated throughout cities in the conference's geographical footprint.[2]
On April 16, 2012, Wilner published an e-book on Andrew Luck titled "Andrew Luck: Inside the Making of a No. 1 Pick."[3]
On June 30, 2022, Wilner broke the news of USC and UCLA's intention to depart the Pac-12 Conference for the Big Ten Conference.[4]
In August 2022, he launched a college football podcast centered around the Pac-12 Conference with John Canzano, formerly of The Oregonian, called "Canzano and Wilner."[5]
Awards and honors
In 2013, Wilner was named the Football Writers Association of America Beat Writer of the Year.[2]
His article, "A dad’s legacy: Warriors’ Kerr guided by father’s example," was named the Best Feature Story of 2015 by the Associated Press Sports Editors.[6] He is a five-time APSE honoree.[1]
Personal life
Wilner is based in San Jose, California, where he resides with his wife, Rachel, and two children.[2]
