Jonathan Merrington Bonnitcha (b. 22 April 1981) is an Australian-born associate professor of law at the University of New South Wales. His primary area of research interest is international economic governance, with a particular interest in investment treaties. Much of his research is inter-disciplinary, drawing on perspectives from the disciplines of economics and political science.[1]
Education
Bonnitcha was educated at Hunters Hill Public School, Chatswood Public School and Newington College from 1993 until 1998.[2] He is a University of Sydney graduate in Economics and Law. He was awarded First Class Honours in Economics in 2003 and the Convocation Medal in 2004.[3][4] He has twice been awarded a Senate Scholarship and the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship for academic and sporting excellence. Other awards include the University Medal, the EC Wheelwright Prize, the JK Galbraith Prize, the Paul M Sweeney Prize, and the 2006 New South Wales Rhodes Scholar.[5][3] As a student he volunteered at the Marrickville Legal Centre and on exchange studied International Economic Law and Human Rights at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands.[4] Bonnitcha spent 6 months based in Barcelona as a freelance travel writer and tourism critic.[6]
Sport
Bonnitcha was a competitive windsurfer and at Sydney University he was awarded a Blue in sailing. In 2002 he was placed 3rd at the World Sailing Championships in the 29er class.[7] In 2003 he was a member of the national Olympic squad for windsurfing.[4] In 2005 he came first in the Australian Sailing Championship (Mistral Class), and was ranked top in the Australian Olympic Class Windsurfing Rankings.[4][8]
