Jonathan D. (JD) Messinger (born Huntington, New York) is an American executive, former radio host, public speaker, and 5-time award-winning author who penned 11 Days in May: The Conversation That Will Change Your Life.[1] He gained national attention in 1989 when he was he was the lead to clean up the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound, leading a large task force and over 100 ships and aircraft.[2]
Background[edit]
Appointed to the United States Naval Academy by the U.S. Secretary of the Navy in 1977, he was one of 37 distinguished graduates in the class of 1981 and went on to become a nuclear submarine officer during the Cold War.[3]
Valdez Oil Spill[edit]
Messinger joined Exxon USA in 1986 and managed fleet, truck, and marine operations in south Florida, bulk fuels inventory for the United States, retail operations in Texas and California, and fuel products pricing for the western United States. In 1989 he supervised the Exxon Valdez oil spill clean-up operations in Prince William Sound, leading a large task force and over 100 ships and aircraft. Following the initial summer clean-up efforts, Exxon scientists worked closely with the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the State of Alaska on the most extensive bioremediation study on oiled shorelines ever carried out. Messinger designed and supervised the bio-remediation implementation team which involved applying fertilizers on the soiled shorelines to stimulate the growth of native microbes which accelerated the rate of natural decay of the oil. This effort earned Messinger national recognition and several peer-generated awards for the cleanup. Afterward, he was recruited by Ernst & Young to help lead re-engineering and systems integration in the energy industry.[4][5]
Early Life[edit]
Messinger was born in Huntington, New York, and served in the Navy after graduating with honors from Huntington High School in 1976. He was a volunteer firefighter with the Halesite Fire Department. In 1977, the United States Secretary of the Navy appointed him to the United States Naval Academy. While attending the U.S. Naval Academy he was captain of the varsity fencing team and second in command of the midshipman plebe regiment. He became a nuclear submarine officer serving on three submarines during the Cold War of the 1980s: U.S.S. Baton Rouge, SSN 689, U.S.S. Tecumseh, SSBN 628, and the U.S.S. Narwhal, SSN 671 where he received his submarine dolphins in 1984. In 1985, he suffered an accident when a crane swung a load and struck him in the neck while supervising the refueling of the nuclear reactor on the U.S.S. Tecumseh while in overhaul in Newport News Shipyard. This injury would resurface in 2000 and alter the course of his life. In January 2000, Messinger broke his neck that altered his life. During a ten-year quest to understand a series of spiritual and unexplained phenomena, these experiences became the source of his success.[6]
Injury[edit]
In early 2000, while CEO of Ernst & Young Singapore Management Consulting, Messinger's neck began to physically deteriorate from a 1985 Navy injury. In countless speeches and radio interviews, Messinger described the morning where his neck collapsed, and claimed he left his body, floated above, and traveled into a tunnel. After the physical recovery, Messinger claims he was bombarded by ideas, premonitions, and creations from dreams and visions that caused him to question his sanity. In 2002, he left Cap Gemini searching for answers to what he calls the 'Big Questions': who am I, where did I come from, and why am I here 6. These visions and insights became the source of his many notable and, in some cases, world-first creations.[7]
In 2018, after nearly 2 decades of research, writing, and speaking Messinger created the Life Fusion Methodology. In 2019, he launched The Messinger Institute to help people overcome suffering and confusion and achieve their full potential under his premise that we are spiritual beings having a physical experience. The Life Fusion Methodology applies spiritual principles to integrate a person's inner game of thoughts and beliefs with their outer game of life and living by balancing the four quadrants of their existence.[8]
