Major General Jonathan J. Cole OBE is a British Army officer. He currently serves as Director of Information in the British Army.
Early life
Cole was born in Woking, Surrey and attended the Winston Churchill School between 1980 and 1984. He then enrolled at the Sandhurst Military Academy and was commissioned into the Royal Signals in 1987.
Military career
Major General Jon Cole [1] is Director of Information, making him the British Army’s Chief Information Officer.[2] The scope of his remit includes command support, intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, reconnaissance and security. This requires him to lead the development of future capabilities, the delivery of systems and services, better exploitation of data, and modernising cyber and electromagnetic activity. He is also responsible for all elements of Army security policy and resources covering information, personnel and physical security.
Qualifications and education
Cole is a Chartered Engineer with the Institute of Engineering and Technology, holds a BEng(Hons) in Electronics, an MSc in Defence Technology, and an MA in International Security & Strategy. He has attended the full range of command and staff courses at the Defence Academy and the Royal College of Defence Studies at Junior, Advanced and Higher levels.
Additional roles and sporting pursuits
Cole is Colonel of the Regiment, Queen’s Gurkha Signals, a Trustee of the Gurkha Welfare Trust, and a Colonel Commandant of the Royal Signals. He is also Chairman of Army Ice Sports, a Vice President of Royal Signals rugby, and President of Royal Signals cycling and triathlon. Outside of his regular military duties he finds time to compete in endurance running and inter-corps road race cycling events. He also coaches a youth rugby team that includes one of his sons as a member.
Personal life
Cole is married and has four children.
